Club History
How it all started......
Before and after World War 2 Hebe Haven was a rather remote place. Hiram's Highway was built in the late 1940's providing improved access, but if you wanted to go to Sai Kung you had to call in at the police station and buy a HK$2 pass to use the road. Having done this it was possible to drive out to Pak Sha Wan on the single track, park the car and be ferried out for a peaceful Sunday as the sole occupant of Trio Beach with its crystal clear water and spotless sand.
The mid 1950's saw the end of the Korean War. Moderate improvements were made to Hiram's Highway which was being used by increasing numbers of pleasure seekers. Some of these people acquired sampans, pilot cutters and old fishing junks which they anchored in the haven for use at weekends. Local Villagers were employed as boat boys.
These numbers grew and by the Summer of 1962 several boat owners had got to know each other. Some of them owned boats that had been damaged during Typhoon Gloria in 1957. It occurred to them that a large part of the problem was improperly secured boats breaking free and wandering through the anchorage, battering other boats off reasonably secured moorings. And so it was that a group of boat owners got together and conceived the Hebe Haven Yacht Club.
